The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are essential pre-university exams for learners applying to study at South African universities. These tests evaluate a learner’s readiness for university, by focusing on academic and quantitative literacy, mathematical literacy, and overall aptitude for complex university coursework.
There are two types of NBT exams: the Mathematics NBT (MAT) and the Academic and Quantitative Literacy NBT (AQL).
The NBT exam that a learner needs to write varies depending on their chosen course and university, as each institution and faculty has its own specific NBT testing requirements. It’s highly advised that all Grade 12 learners write the NBT, as it broadens their university and course options while increasing their chance of acceptance in the already competitive university application landscape.
