Struggling with preparing for the NBT’s? We have you covered. We have helped over 5500 students nationwide ace their NBTs through our resources and workshops.

What are the NBTs and why are they important?

The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are pre-university assessments for learners applying to study at universities within South Africa.

The NBTs are designed to measure a learner’s academic, qualitative and mathematical literacy to ensure that they have the aptitude to handle complex university coursework.

There are two types of NBT exams:

  • Mathematics NBT (MAT)
  • English & Qualitative Literacy NBT (AQL)

The NBT exam that a student has to write depends on the their course and university of choice, as different universities and faculties have different NBT requirements.

How do I know which NBT exams to apply for?

The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are compulsory at most South African universities for some if not all faculties. Below is the list of universities where NBTs are required for some if not all programmes:

  • University of Cape Town (UCT)
  • University of Witswatersrand (WITS)
  • Stellenbosch University
  • University of Free State (UFS)
  • Rhodes University

Some of the faculties in the above-mentioned universities do not require NBTs or only require one NBT exam (either the MAT or AQL). To find out exactly which NBT your preferred faculty and university requires, check the course’s entry requirements.
